When the U.S. declared war on April 6, 1917, the U.S. military ranked 16th in the world, just behind Portugal.  The Army had 121,797 enlisted men and 5,791 officers.  By July, General John J. Pershing requested a force of one million men. As part of the march to war, a propaganda campaign was instituted by the Committee on Public Information that included tens of thousands of government-selected community leaders giving pro-war speeches, as well as the production of newsreels, photographs, articles, and recruiting posters by some of America’s top illustrators. Themes of patriotism, adventure, education, nobility and manhood were used to appeal to potential recruits. The examples in this gallery show the visual aesthetic of the time. By the end of the war, four million American soldiers had been drafted.
